Summer Lessons

The summer is a good time for dedicated piano students to accelerate their learning. The summer sessions are used to work on creative goals and fun musical projects. They take place during June and July, and the schedule may vary. Students are encouraged to study for the whole session or as many as possible. However, if vacation plans are made during that time, it is required for students to take at minimum six lessons during the summer to keep a slot in the studio. It is possible to arrange a special schedule for you in the summer. The regular fall semester starts the first week of August.

Make–Ups and Missed Lessons

I need a minimum of 24 hours of advance notice to reschedule. It is important to keep the lesson time we agree on regularly, except for cases of illness. A make-up will be arranged. The studio is too full to arrange makeups for any other reason. There is no open make-up slot.

1. Arrange a swap with another student who has the same amount of time. I can help facilitate a swap through e-mail.

2. If someone cancels I can put you on a call list for that session

Refunds

Under no circumstances can tuition be refunded or credited for missed lessons. Enrollment fees for special events can not be refunded even if a student fails to participate, since the teacher cannot retrieve funds submitted to festival committees.

Lesson Preparation

A good amount of practice time varies on the ability and level of the student. Young students (under 6) require adult supervision at home and should set aside 15 minutes a day for practice with an adult. Older students should set aside 30 minutes to 45 minutes a day for practice and one session a week for written work. Very advanced students should set aside an hour to an hour and a half a day to make good progress. Books are required at each lesson, clean fingernails and hands, and a metronome at home is always helpful! Please bring a smile and a positive attitude to each meeting!

Piano

It is important to have a piano at home that is tuned regularly. I would recommend something with weighted keys for finger development. Acoustic is best, but some electronic keyboards are very good. I am happy to help you shop around for a keyboard. If you have questions about what to look for and where, just ask! The piano technicians I recommend are Sue and David Shmuck who can be reached at (505) 345-0134, also Alexander Boggs (505) 480-9225. Pianos should be tuned when the air conditioning of heating comes on at the change of the seasons, at least twice a year.

Performance

Studio recitals are given twice a year at the close of each semester, one in the fall and one in the spring. Students are encouraged to participate but not required. The recitals are fun and a good way for us to get to know each other! There a many opportunities for composition, performance and community outreach that happen during the year that are available to the students. More information on these programs can be found at nmmusicfed.org.

Group Lessons

Throughout the year usually preceding a big performance, group classes are organized to help us prepare. They allow you to try out your pieces in front of an audience and receive peer critiques. It is a good opportunity to workshop your music and listen to what the other students are up to. The group class is mandatory for all students who wish to participate in the recital.

I look forward to working with you! If you have any questions about studio policies or anything at all, please feel free to email me at machina34 [at] gmail [dot] com.
